ENGLISH Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) recently played host to prolific writer Datuk Dr M. Shanmughalingam (pic) who was invited to read extracts from his works.
The Performance Readings event was the first to be organised by the ELT Library and held at ELTC’s new campus in Bandar Enstek, Nilai.
An audience of 200 Form Two students, teacher trainees and lecturers from neighbouring schools and teacher training institutes attended the event.Dr Shanmughalingam was accompanied by ELTC director Dr Ranjit Singh Gill.
Dr Ranjit stressed that there was now a need for young learners to master the English language to meet global demands. He added that the reading habit should be inculcated in young learners as mastery of the language can be extended through extensive reading.
ELTC develops and implements professional development programmes and courses for the Education Ministry’s in-service teachers of English. ELTC has organised numerous events that promote the learning and communicative use of the English language.
This aim was realised through the Performance Readings event which was organised to present to English language practitioners various innovative ways for reaching out to young readers.
The event was also aimed at instilling interest in reading literary works. It was therefore a great opportunity for the students to meet Dr Shanmughalingam whose famous piece Heir Conditioning is included in the literary text for Form 2 English literature students.
Dr Shanmughalingam is not only an avid writer, but one who is hugely talented in reading aloud.
He left the crowd in stitches throughout his readings from his 11 extracts.
He brought characters to life and mesmerised the audience with his dramatic hand gestures and varied tones, depicting an excellent example of how literary works can be brought to life through animated readings.
The audience then proceeded to delve deeper into the life of the author by asking him questions relating to his interest and motivation to write, his feelings towards his works and the challenges he faces as a writer.
